The palmetto has long been a beloved symbol of fertility and prosperity.
Palmettes have been widely used around the world, including in Egypt and Western Asia, and have been considered a symbol of fertility because of their spreading leaves and the large, plentiful fruits they bear.
The oldest known symbol of fertility was found in a palace relief unearthed in Assyria (present-day northern Iraq). From there it developed as a decoration, involving the use of linked ivy, which evolved from an independent motif into a continuous horizontal pattern under Egyptian influence.
Surprisingly, it has deep ties to Japan, and many of its patterns remain as a type of arabesque. The honeysuckle crest, which consists of a series of honeysuckle vines, can also be considered a type of palmette.
